Hey folks, some time ago I got an offer in Omaha, NE, and want to know if there is a cheap way to tow my car from the East coast to Nebraska. I will be moving my entire apartment, so I was thinking of getting a Uhaul moving van with a tow dolly. But prices Im getting are upwards of $2500. At that price I was thinking it would be easier to maybe get a craigslist Explorer or Durango, use it to move and sell it when I get to Omaha. the only expense I see would be for the rental tow dolly. Let me know if you have any better ideas.

I had a similar scenario. I ended up buying a car and stuffing it with everything I could.

How much shit do you have? During my last big move, I used ABF to move my shit and drove myself and the family with just the essentials.

when my buddy moved from houston to kansas city, he got me to drive the uhaul, so he could drive his car. then i megabussed home. he was bandit in a bmw 135 & i was snowman. i stayed for a couple of weeks and helped him acclimate to new surroundings, 'twas a blast & probably more economical than any other option.

If it's just you and your stuff, a used, full size cargo van wouldn't be a bad bet. They are pretty cheap, and would easily fit a bachelor pad amount of stuff and tow a small car behind.

Will the new employer pay any of your moving expenses? Worth checking into as some do. Also, some moving expenses are tax deductible so it can pay to keep a good record of that stuff. Good luck!

When I started looking yesterday, a lot of junk, by looks of things, I have been tyring to throw away a lot of things, but should be enough to fill a uhaul Ford Ecoline I think

I would get a full trailer insted of dolly if you can swing it. I moved from IL to NC this past September, and had the biggest truck Budget would rent me, a 26' International with the 6.0 Diesel. The plan was to tow my pickup on a trailer behind it, but through a horrible online registration system, I didn't know my truck wouldn't fit until it was too late, and my car wouldn't fit at all because of height issues.
I, personally, would either bribe a friend with free food and a flight back home to drive the car or truck for/with you, or get a big enough truck to comfortably trailer it.
Edited to include a photo showing my appreciation of the shitbox truck they rented me.

2500 seems high. When I went Seattle to DC with a two bedroom house it was just less than 4k with Allied. Just pulled the Miata into the trailer with the household goods too and it was priced the same as if we had additional furniture weight. The guys just showed up, loaded the boxes and furniture, drove the car on (didn't have to drain any fluids or anything and it was encouraged to be packed full) all within a couple hours.
Priced out doing it with U-haul and it was ballpark the same price with a lot more hassle.

Yeah, they dont provide moving expenses to consultants unfortunately. That was a clause in the contract. I didnt know moving costs were tax deductable, I will probably look into it thanks.

You don't need to tow it. Just put it in the Uhaul!

Ha Ha! that probably was a lot of fun, I probably need a lot of beer to bribe one of my friends to do something like that.
